Obituary

Raymond A. Devorkin, 96, beloved husband of the late Anna Lee; loving father of Michael (the late Jo-Ann) (Michael’s partner Susan Lennon) and Linda (Dennis) Christensen; cherished grandfather of Sarah Devorkin and Carly (Jon) Daulton; devoted son of the late Mildred and Sidney Devorkin; and brother-in-law of the late Marilyn (Alan I. “Irv”) Boyer, the late Leonore Steinberg; and the late Irwin Steinberg (Dominique); sister of the late Harriet (the late Bernard) Cohen; and treasured uncle and friend of many. His devotion to family, and his sacrifice, trust, wise counsel, love, help, and friendship made a difference in the lives of family, friends, and employees. Graduating at the top of his engineering class at the University of Illinois, he enlisted on December 8, 1941, before graduation. He was a humble but proud and devoted patriot, WWII 1st Lieutenant Army Air Corps Navigator, who was awarded two Bronze Star Medals while serving in more than 15 countries, navigating by the stars the first route from Newfoundland to Africa, and as far as India to supply Chinese forces. After the War, he was Founder and President of Airline Paper Stock Company and General Paper Shredding Company for 30 years, during which he also served as an officer of the Waste Trade Industry Association of Chicago. He was a special “people person,” who sacrificed for and gave to his family and friends, without asking for anything in return. He was a friend of the underdog, who was active in politics and worked hard to make this country better, fairer, and more just for everyone. He loved all Chicago sports teams, and a greater fan there never was. We all experienced him as central to our lives and will miss him deeply.
